Drawing and printmaking in East Sussex
My practice is primarily focussed on drawing from observation or en plein air, inspired by the beautiful Sussex countryside, its ancient woodland and organic forms in gardens. This means you might find me perched on a stool in a field, on a forest trail or in Great Dixter where I volunteer. Great Dixter is a historic house and garden and it was the family home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd. It's a wonderful place to draw.
Working observationally on location has always been enough in itself and drawing forms a central pillar in my portfolio. I enjoy working digitally en plein air. Back in the studio, drawings may be developed into short limited edition prints (etchings, collagraphs and linocuts) or digital collages with more topographical narratives, which are created by combining images made in traditional media with digital drawing.
I have recently been exploring screen printing having been awarded the inaugural Sonsoles Print Studio prize at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for my linocut ‘Sky over Skye’ which was also long listed for the Jackson’s art prize 2024.
I graduated from the Royal Drawing School’s Online Drawing Development Year in 2023 and in 2024 joined their print residency at Dumfries House in Ayrshire which was supported by the King's Foundation. My etching 'Dumfries House through the trees' and my digital drawing 'The healing of gentle rain' have been donated to the Dumfries House collection.
The ODDY23 course has opened up interests in topographical narratives and creating an interplay between media such as making graphite imprints from collagraph-style blocks.
In future I’m hoping to show my work more frequently in public. I would love to hear about residency opportunities, because I've loved joining the Royal Drawing School's Dumfries House residency and creating my Great Dixter diaries. I'm also looking for an open access print studio (preferably locally in East Sussex) to work on my etchings, experimental intaglio prints and to work at scale.
Thanks for taking time to look at my work.
